owada were formed. They started playing live in London at venues such as The Monarch, Camden Arts Centre and The Hanover Grand, and were invited to play at various art events in London. At this time their set was only 10 minutes long.

owada was featured along with David Bowie, Damien Hirst and Gilbert & George in Time Out's Pop/Art Special.

First performance in USA at 'Gavin Brown's Enterprise', New York, famous for exhibiting paintings by artist Elisabeth Payton, whose portraits of British rock icons such as Liam Gallagher and Jarvis Cocker are well-known.
owada's gigs gathered huge attention not only from the art world but also from the worlds of fashion, music, film and tv and the internet.
owada's performance was aired on New York's art TV 'Gallery Beat' and their song 'X' has been used as the theme tune of the programme ever since.
In the same month they played live at Chelsea College of Art in London.
1997 january

Open air performance at British School in Rome and at 'Big Mama', the legendary jazz and blues club where BB King and other notable musicians have played. owada's performance was noted as the first by a 'minimalist punk band' in the club's history.
In the same month owada played the Gate Theatre in London to a more-than-capacity crowd.

Performed at 'List 97', an international art fair in Basel, Switzerland alongside work by artists such as Picasso and Damien Hirst.

Played at 'Live Stock Market', a street festival organised by artists in london. owada were included in 'Blimey' by Matthew Collings, a book about the London art scene since the 60s, published by David Bowie's new publishing house, 21.

Performed at Winston Kingdom in Amsterdam. owada also contributed the song 'Feeling Blue' to a compilation CD 'Bring your own walkman' by internation artists, released in the same month.
They performed on a disco floor from New York at London's ICA as part of 'Assuming Positions', the controversial show that gathered together art and pop works such as Pulp's pop video and work by Sarah Lucas.
